Medical weight management

Medical weight management services offer assessment and treatment from healthcare professionals. Depending on the service, this can include lifestyle and dietary support, prescription weight-loss medicines, or weight-loss (bariatric) surgery.

In England, CQC regulates "services in slimming clinics", which is where a doctor prescribes medicines to help people lose weight. Independent hospitals offering bariatric surgery are also CQC-registered. This category includes clinics registered for slimming-clinic services and clinics whose names refer to weight loss or bariatric care.

Weight-loss medicines

Weight-loss injections, such as semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro), are prescription-only medicines. A prescriber should:

  • check your medical history, current medicines and whether the medicine is suitable for you
  • check your weight and height, rather than relying only on what you tell them
  • explain possible side effects and what to do if you have them
  • arrange follow-up while you're taking the medicine

Only buy prescription medicines from a registered pharmacy. You can check online pharmacies on the General Pharmaceutical Council register. The MHRA has warned about fake and unlicensed weight-loss products sold online and through social media.

NHS options

Some weight-loss medicines are available on the NHS for people who meet NICE criteria, usually through specialist weight management services. Your GP can tell you what's available locally and whether you're eligible, including NHS weight management programmes.

Weight-loss surgery

Bariatric surgery, such as a gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, is major surgery that needs careful assessment and lifelong follow-up. Ask a provider about the surgeon's experience, the aftercare included, what happens if there are complications, and how follow-up works if you live far from the hospital.

Costs

We don't publish prices. For medicines, ask about the cost of the consultation, the medicine at each dose, delivery and follow-up. For surgery, ask for a written quote that includes aftercare and the cost of treating complications.

FAQs

Are online weight-loss services regulated?

It depends who runs them. Doctor-led prescribing services in England must register with CQC. Online pharmacies are regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council. You can check both.

Why is a hospital in this list?

Some hospitals are included because they offer weight-loss surgery, or are registered for slimming-clinic services.

How clinics are included

Every clinic on CQC Clinics is an active location on the Care Quality Commission's register of independent healthcare services, as published by CQC. The CQC register doesn't record specialties such as "ADHD" or "dermatology", so we place clinics in categories using their names, website addresses and the activities and service types they are registered for. We would rather leave a clinic out of a category than guess, so some clinics that offer this care won't appear in this list. You can still find every clinic through search or by region. More about how categories work.

What CQC registration means

Registration means CQC has agreed that the provider can carry out specific regulated activities at this location. It is a legal requirement for these services in England, not a recommendation. A CQC rating, where one has been published, is CQC's judgement from its last assessment. Check the clinician's own professional registration, and the clinic's latest information on cqc.org.uk, before you book. What CQC ratings mean.
